For more than 35 years, I’ve worked at the intersection of leadership, organizational culture, and transformation as a corporate executive, consultant, coach, and board director.
These experiences taught me what effective leadership actually requires, and they left me with four convictions:
- Character is the basis for leadership.
- Leadership is character on display.
- Culture is the sum of leaders’ behaviors and permissions.
- Culture sustains, promotes or inhibits results.
Together, they explain the influence leaders have on the organizations they lead, for better and for worse. The encouraging part is that every link in that chain can be strengthened. Character can be built, responses can be chosen, and culture can be changed, one decision at a time.
